The loner Giovanni takes care of his sick mother while waiting for the return of his absent father.One night, he witness how a mysterious train appears out of nowhere; is the milky way railroad, the one that carries the spirits to their final destination. Campanella, his partner, is already in, and so Giovanni decides to embark himself on a magical train journey. ///
The scenes are builded in the form of chapters of the novel by Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933).The themes explored are: the sickness; the ephemeral nature of life; the poverty, the starve, the human cruelty, but always the main theme that unites everything is death. It is a story about the end to which all existence is directed: the end of all beings and their works. Deeply dark and harrowing (Miyazawa wrote his novel after the death of a beloved sister); but at the same time maintains a premise that gives meaning to life: self-sacrifice for others. The director decided to replace the human characters by... cats; and for some strange reason this seems to work (don't ask me how). The motifs of necrological literature are displayed: crosses, the "danse macabre" (death dance) in the Centaurus Festival, Ravens, the Christian sacred hymns, apples, human skulls, life as a river "that gather downward to the sea we know as Death...". The image is always suggestive, narrates the story through symbols.The characters build a whole allegory of death (looks like a Dante's journey): an Archaeologist; The Bird Hunter; The Blind radio operator; Some Castaways. Is not an easy film to understand, but it is extremely gratifying. From time to time, anime produces such original pieces as this one. It is among the most prestigious works in the history of Japanese animation, and has been important in establishing the idea of anime as part of the culture and a new art form. (by pelida77)
El solitario Giovanni cuida de su
madre enferma mientras espera por el retorno de su padre ausente. Una noche
observa como un misterioso tren arriba desde la nada, es el tren de la vía
Láctea que lleva a los espíritus a su destino final. En él viene ya su
compañero Campanella, y Giovanni se decide también por abordarlo. /// Las
escenas están construidas bajo la forma de capítulos de la novela de Kenji
Miyazawa (1896-1933). Sus temas son la enfermedad, lo efímero, la pobreza, el
hambre, la crueldad, pero siempre el tema principal que todo lo aúna es la
muerte. Es un relato sobre el fin al que se dirige toda existencia: el fin de
los seres y de sus creaciones. Profundamente oscura y desgarradora, pero al
mismo tiempo sostiene una premisa que otorga sentido a la vida: el propio
sacrificio en pos de otros; bien apropiada a la obra del poeta. El director ha
decidido reemplazar los personajes humanos por gatos, y por alguna extraña
razón esto parece funcionar. Los motivos y tópicos clásicos de una necrológica
se suceden: cruces, la danza macabra en
el Festival Centauro, cuervos, himnos sagrados cristianos, manzanas, la parca, nuestras vidas como ríos “[...] que van a dar
a la mar, que es el morir [...]”. La imagen es siempre sugerente, va narrando mediante símbolos
la historia. Los personajes construyen toda una alegoría de la muerte (parece
un viaje dantesco): Un arqueólogo, el cazador de aves, el operador de radio ciego,
unos náufragos. No es una película fácil de comprender, pero es sumamente
gratificante. En ocasiones el animé se ha permitido piezas tan originales como
esta; se encuentra entre las obras más reconocidas en la historia de la
animación japonesa, y ha sido fundamental para instaurar la idea del animé como
parte de la cultura y una nueva forma de arte. La música por Hosono Haruomi es
