SPIRITED AWAY (2001, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, Film)

DIR: Hayao Miyazaki / GUI: Hayao Miyazaki / DP: Hayao Miyazaki / ART: Youji Takeshige
/ ANI: Masashi Ando / MÚS: Joe Hisaishi / PRD: Studio Ghibli.

Exploring the vicinity of what will be their new home, Chihiro's family finds what looks like an abandoned cultural theme park. With nightfall a spell turns the parents into pigs; and so the daughter is left to fend for herself in the Bathhouse of the witch Yubaba. ///

This film is perhaps Miyazaki's most serious in tone: cultural pollution, environmental issues and rampant consumerism are some of its themes. The good old Hayao seems to look to the future with concern. The world of traditional Japan has been completely forgotten; the same world that in My Neighbour Totoro (1988) was omnipresent. There's a hint of nihilism in this and most of the film ends up being disturbing, like a nightmare told as a fairy tale. But at the same time Miyazaki gives us a love story, a Hero's Journey (with all its stages), a satire of Shoujo and in essence, a new myth. The design screams clearly that this is an eastern  creation, and is proud of it. Chihiro is the perfect example of the overflowing Japanese imagination.

The animation, as always, impeccable; and there are some innovations that make this a masterpiece. Joe Hisaishi was more than inspired: see the scene of the train ride, and then compare it with Night On The Galactic Railroad (1985); the music infuses every scene with something poetic... and as always with poetic things: end up being indefinible (by pelida77)

POMPOKO (1994, Heisei Tanuki Gassen Pompoko, Movie)

DIR: Isao Takahata / GUI: Isao Takahata (Or: Kenji Miyazawa) / DP: Shinji Otsuka; Megumi Kagawa / ART: Kazuo Oga / ANI: Shinji Otsuka / MÚS: Joe Hisaishi / PRD: Studio Ghibli.

When a new human suburban development project threatens to establish nearby, the very existence of a Tanuki community (Japanese raccoon dog) will be in jeopardy. The Leaders propose to prevent the human settlement, by engaging in a secret war, probably with almost no hope of victory. But they have a weapon: the ancient and subtle art of Metamorphosis (being able to transform into other animals, objects and even people). /// This film takes the form of a documentary, where the racoons give us their testimony with Voice Overs (an original narrative form, for animation). Taking advantage of human superstitions is one of the tactics of the Tanuki, so constantly we are refer to numerous legends and folk tales (the film is a Japanese folk bestiary of creatures and traditional motifs). It's a fantasy that overflows imagination, absolutely brilliant. The theme of animals rebelling against man is common in animation, but thanks to Takahata, in Pompoko, becomes a very serious manifesto against environmental destruction, culture oblivion and the ignorance of traditions. Pompoko tone is primarily that of an elegy, where all we survey seems to be last seen: the last mountain, the last tree, the last battle (by pelida77)

(by pelida77)

NIGHT ON THE GALACTIC RAILROAD (1985, Ginga Tetsudo no Yoru, Movie)

JPN: Ginga Tetsudō no Yoru "The night on the Milky Way Train"  / DIR: Guisaburo Sugii / SCR: Minoru Betsuyaku (Or: Kenji Miyazawa)  / DES: Takao Kodama  / ART: Mihoko Magoori / ANI: Marisuke Eguchi / MUS: Haruomi Hosono / PRD: Asahi; Tac. / 1h 47m.

The loner Giovanni takes care of his sick mother while waiting for the return of his absent father. One night, he witness how a mysterious train appears out of nowhere; is the milky way railroad, the one that carries the spirits to their final destination. Campanella, his partner, is already in, and so Giovanni decides to embark himself on a magical train journey.  ///
The scenes are builded in the form of chapters of the novel by Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933).The themes explored are: the sickness; the ephemeral nature of life; the poverty,  the starve, the human cruelty, but always the main theme that unites everything is death. It is a story about the end to which all existence is directed: the end of all beings and their works. Deeply dark and harrowing (Miyazawa wrote his novel after the death of a beloved sister); but at the same time maintains a premise that gives meaning to life: self-sacrifice for others. The director decided to replace the human characters by... cats; and for some strange reason this seems to work (don't ask me how). The motifs of necrological literature are displayed: crosses, the "danse macabre" (death dance) in the Centaurus Festival, Ravens, the Christian sacred hymns, apples, human skulls, life as a river "that gather downward to the sea we know as Death...". The image is always suggestive, narrates the story through symbols. The characters build a whole allegory of death (looks like a Dante's journey): an Archaeologist; The Bird Hunter;  The Blind radio operator; Some Castaways. Is not an easy film to understand, but it is extremely gratifying. From time to time, anime produces such original pieces as this one. It is among the most prestigious works in the history of Japanese animation, and has been important in establishing the idea of anime as part of the culture and a new art form. (by pelida77)

(by pelida77)

HOLS, PRINCE OF THE SUN (1968, Taiyo no Ko Horusu no Daiboken, Movie)

JPN: Taiyō no Ōji: Horusu no Daibōken "The Prince of the Sun, Hols great adventure" / DIR: Isao Takahata / SCR: Isao Takahata / DES: Yoichi Kôtabe; Hayao Miyazaki / ART: Mataji Urata; Hayao Miyazaki / ANI: Yasuo Otsuka / MUS: Michio Mamiya / PRD: Toei Dôga. / 1h 21m.

This is the story of the emergence of a hero in the least expected place. A young fisher, Hols, being able to pull the sword of the sun from a stone idol, begins the adventure that will discover him his true origins and will turn him into the last hope of his village.  /// A simple story but not without symbolism. Old-school animators consider Hols as the most influential piece of Japanese animation. It showed them how, taught them that it was possible for japanese animation to find its own ways. The fluidity of animation is amazing (for a Japanese 60's piece); Some of the scenes are remarkable (e.g.: The fight with the giant fish; Piria's wedding; The snowstorm; ) they are like animated winter landscape paintings. And in the moments of stillness, the lovely design and the "camera work" hide the lack of movement (e.g.: the wolves attack the village). Beautiful music in general, but especially touching the songs made by Hilda. (by pelida77)

(by pelida77)

LITTLE NEMO: ADVENTURES IN SLUMBERLAND / EL PEQUEÑO NEMO (1989, Ritoru Nimo, Movie)

JPN: Ritoru Nimo: "Little Nemo"  / DIR: Masami Hata; William Hurtz / SCR: Cris Columbus (Or: Winsor Mccay) / DES: Jean “Moebius” Giraud / ART: Nizo Yamamoto / ANI: Yasuo Otsuka / MUS: Richard Sherman; Robert Sherman / PRD: Tokyo Movie Shinsha. / 1h 34m.

Little Nemo, a boy living in 1905's New York, receives an invitation to travel to Slumberland. In this fantasy land from which all good dreams come, Nemo will... screw the things up, endangering the world, and thus he will be forced to engage in a series of fantastic adventures.  ///
Seeing this, you have the impression of being faced with a Disney production; And it is not a completely wrong impression: it is based on the famous comic made by Winsor McCay; many of its creators were Americans; and the studio made everything possible to prevent Nemo from being an authentic Japanese film (Takahata and Miyazaki abandoned the project over creative differences). Is not easy to clearly distinguish those who were its creators: the sheer number of producers involved shows the difficulties experienced by the film. However, at the time, Nemo was one of the biggest projects of Japanese industry with a budget that triples the one of Akira: and therefore they were able to develop an above-average animation (which, by the way, was in charged of veteran Yasuo Otsuka)  (by pelida77)

Have a glimpse of this movie...

LAPUTA: CASTLE IN THE SKY / EL CASTILLO EN EL CIELO (1986, Tenku no Shiro Laputa, Film)

DIR: Hayao Miyazaki / GUI: Hayao Miyazaki / ART: Nizo Yamamoto; Toshiro Nozaki / DP: Hayao Miyazaki / ANI: Tsukasa Tannai / MÚS: Joe Hisaishi / PRD: Studio Ghibli.

The crystals of power made possible for the laputian civilization to build floating castles in the sky. But 700 years later the only thing that remains from them it's a myth. Some say that hidden from the eyes of men the island of Laputa, the capital of the ancient Kingdom, still flies. The army searchs for it in order to conquer the world with its powers. The pirates just want its legendary treasure. The last of the crystals is the key to find the lost city, and it lies on the hands of an innocent young girl: Sheeta, our heroine.

Laputa its in between the Science Fiction and the Fantasy genre. But I think it has an strong aspect of a 'Fairy Tale', thats why I put it under the Fantasy list (and after all, Sheeta is a princess locked in a castle and... also a Witch). The Sky, the Earth, and the Mines, show us very different worlds; and what is untold creates a sense of deepness: you can feel there is a long story behind each of this worlds (and of course, you want to know more of them). Every single scene is perfect, among the best in the history of animation. The humour is very candid, the sort of things that made us laugh when the world was young. The way the story is told is simply magnificent, and the plot catches your attention till the very end. Miyazaki and his people made anime reach the heights of this floating Castle, and more than 25 years after its premiere you look at this gem, and wonder. (by_pelida77)

(by pelida77)

HAKUJADEN (1958, Taiji Yabushita, Movie)

JPN: Hakujaden, "The White Snake" / AKA: Legend of the White Serpent; The White Snake Enchantress; Panda and the Magic Serpent / DIR: Taiji Yabushita / SCR: Sochi Yashiro, Taiji Yabushita / DES: Akira Okuwara; Yasuji Mori / ART: Kazuo Kusano; Koiji Maeba / ANI: Yasuo Otsuka; Gisaburo Sugii; Kazuko Nakamura; Reiko Okuyama / MUS: Masayoshi Ikeda / PRD: Toei Dôga. 1h 15m

This was the first color Animation Feature of Japan and the first japanese animation to be released in USA. It bringed Toei Dôga some fame on the West, and probed that producing animation for theater release was commercially viable. It is loosely based on a Chinese legend: The legend of the White Snake; but really there are multiple versions of this core myth in all asian cultures. Here, a young boy, Xu-Xian pets a White Snake, but his parents force them to separate. The Snake is really a Yôkai, the haunted spirit of a woman named Bai Suzhen. She has fallen in love for the boy and will continue to search for him. The years past and finally, the handsome Xu-Xian and the beautiful Bai Suzhen - yes...in human form - meet again. But a priest (a bonzo monk) named Fa Hai in charged of expelting all the bad spirits from the Earth will try to kill the snake Yôkai... ///

As a teenager, Hayao Miyazaki watched this movie; and once said that the innocence and simplicity of it, produced such a profound impression on him, that made him want to become an animator. And the animation is very simple indeed, but beautiful: flawless artisanic handicraft. The background art is a little bit exotic (because we are in China) and the character design looks like it has been inspired from ancient Chinese painting stamps. The influence of the american cartoon it is also felt, specially with the design of the little cute animals. In the climatic duel, Bai Suzhen and the priest, both literally float in the sky, throwing each other supernatural lightning atacks: a scene that seems like one of the fights in many contemporary anime Shônen pieces. Eventually the priest will erase Bai Suzhen, sending her to the spirits world. She will fly through space and time over the milky way geting in front of Kamisama, trading him her inmortality for a human body and a mortal life near Xu-Xian. So, this fantasy piece, esentially is a romantic story; Love can overcome anything, even death. (by pelida77)

(by pelida77)

SHONEN SARUTOBI SASUKE (1959, Taiji Yabushita, Movie)

JPN: Shônen Sarutobi Sasuke, "The Sarutobi Boy, Sasuke" / AKA: Magic Boy, Adventures of little Samurai, Sasuke Ninja Boy / DIR: Taiji Yabushita; Akira Daikuwara / SCR: Toppei Matsumura / DES: Akira Daikuwara; Hideo Furusawa / ART: Saburo Yokoi; Mataji Urata; Kazue Itô / ANI: Taku Sugiyama; Gisaburo Sugii; Norio Hikone / MUS: Satoshi Funemura; Toru Funamura / PRD: Toei Dôga. 1h 23m.

To defeat an evil Yokai (a demon known as Princess Yasha), little Sasuke wants to learn the ancient art of Nin Jutsu (here, a sort of Magical Kung Fu). He leaves the comfort of the family home, and his only sister Oyu; learns Magic from an ermit, and return years later to kill the Yokai.
This was the second theatrical feature length film released by Toei. Some of the animators that worked in this one will later join Tezuka in Mushi Productions (but certainly they didn't use there almost anything of what they've learned).
It is also known as The Adventures of Little Samurai; but Sasuke is a Sarutobi, which is a sort of ninja, or a martial art outlaw... (in any case opossed to the samurai). The beautifull art that Toei came to forge made the studio be known throughout the world. And this one was also the first japanese animated feature to be released in America (by MGM).
The orphan brothers was Toei's formula to the childrens heart, and they will use it again in Anju To Zushio Maru (1961). They fed childrens anxieties and fears: the loss of a pet; parental abandonment; a possible divorce; the upcoming birth of a new baby, etc.

The first half of the movie shows a considerable influence from Disney's Bambi (1942); specially in the backgrounds (but we also have a killed deer: the mother of one of Sasuke's pets). The animation shows big flaws; but this clumsiness makes the movie more appealing to the nostalgic eye. And the music exceed all praise, with memorable tunes and some fantastic vocals.
The highlight of this movie, at least for me, is the extraordinary Geisha dance performed by the Yokai. But the magical duel is definetely Japanese Anime in its purest form: the characters fly and throw each other fireballs atacks... and all of this way before Dragon Ball Z. So this is also a really cool Kung Fu kind of movie. (by pelida77)

ANJU TO ZUSHIO MARU (1961, Movie)

JPN: Anju To Zushio Maru "The nobles Anju and Zushio"/ DIR: Taiji Yabushita; Yugo Serikawa / SCR: Sumie Tanaka (Or: Ogai Mori) /DES: Isamu Takahashi / ART: Seiichi Toriizuka / ANI: Sanae Yamamoto / MUS: Tadashi Kinoshita; Hajime Kaburagui / PRD: Tôei Dôga. 1h 23m.

When the Governor of Mutsû is falsely acussed of a crime, his lands would be confiscated and his family left to fend for themselves. His children's, the teenager Anju and her little brother Zushio, must grow up at once in order to deal with the vicissitudes of their fate. ///

This is Tôei Dôga's fourth animated feature film; and one of my all time favorites: Anju To Zushio Maru, presented in the West as "The littlest Warrior" or "The orphan brother" (the Italians have the worst translated movie titles; here: Robin e i due moschettieri e mezzo, Robin and the two and a half musketeers). It's based on the novel Sanshô Dayû (Sansho the Steward, 1915) written by Ogai Mori (1862-1922).

Usually Fantasy is aimed at a young audience but Japanese are weird people, and so they sometime explore very dark themes in their animations. In the first half of the movie we are forced to watch the completion of a family tragedy. Here, the mother will be sold into prostitution, and the childrens as slaves. "You should not be worried.-their mother says -Your father is innocent", but she cannot see that there is no justice in this fairy tale world, therefore she will be blinded (punishment for trying to escape).
This animation is so deep and unique that we are even able to witness a simbolic suicide when the beautiful Anju -runing away from torture-, throw herself to a Lake, and is transformed into a white swann that will fly away from all her troubles.

This family drama develops multiple elements of Fantasy. A good example of this will be the duel between Zushio and the Bakemono (a type of Yôkai: a spirit that have the abilitie to transform). Also the children's maid is killed by drowning and then transformed into a mermaid (a Ningyo).

I've put it first on the list because this movie perfectly ilustrates how Japanese people use Fantasy to tell all type of stories. Anju To Zushio Maru would be severely criticized by future generations of animators. Tôei Dôga had many problems with strikes during the 60's, the working conditions were miserable and the management - as usual - complet assholes. This movie sort of exalt the acceptance of stoic suffering: "bear your suffering you'll get rewarded". I don't know if that is the final message, certainly this movie is not as "rebelious" as Takahata's Hols prince of the sun (1968), but neither is as optimistic. Also, it is frequently compared with the live action movie based on the same novel and made by master filmmaker Kenji Mizoguchi: Sanshô Dayû (1954), one of the greatest movies of all time (in any language): so I think is quite unfair to compare that with this very nice piece of animation. I love it, Hope you do too.

A sort of Introduction - Una especie de Introducción

"(Anime) It's another World"
(Mamoru Oshii)

An anime falls into the Fantasy Genre when its plot, theme, or characters involves supernatural elements. That is: the use of Magic or Alchemy; multiple metamorphosis, wonderfull creatures and other impossible or non-existent phenomena. In a Fantasy piece the main themes have nothing to do with science (that's the ground of the SciFi genre) neither with something macabre (that belongs to the Horror genre). In Fantasy, a hero or a heroine start an adventure, in an imaginary landscape - sometimes an alternate dimention - where they will experience conditions that trascends the laws of natural world, in order to achieve a personal goal or to fulfill the part destiny gave them. Fantasy in Japanese Animation explores three different tendencies:

1) Fantasy linked with the Japanese Tradition (and the one from Asia in general): Some Shintô and Buddhist religion stories; miths and legends, fables and folktales that features creatures like the Kami: spirits or natural forces; the Yôkai: monsters, haunted, e.g.: the Oni: demons; Shikigami: Spirits summoned by a Sorcerer; Bakeneko: Cat Monster, etc. (but nothing macabre).

2) New forms of Fantasy inspired by Japanese Popular Culture: Anime made based on card and video games (specially RPG's); the Pocket Monster genre and the Magical Shôjo genre; also anime based on Fantasy Novels (usually Western novels).

3) Adaptations of Western Fairy Tales, e.g.: the stories of Hans Christian Andersern or the Grimm Brothers tales (with all its creatures and characters)

Fantasy it's the escapist genre by excellence. It pleases a society in conflict with its past. But Fantasy it's also a way to link traditional culture with modern day life, and a method to criticise the reality by alternate routes, avoiding controversial issues.
