When a new human suburban development project threatens to establish nearby, the very existence of a Tanuki community (Japanese raccoon dog) will be in jeopardy. The Leaders propose to prevent the human settlement, by engaging in a secret war, probably with almost no hope of victory. But they have a weapon: the ancient and subtle art of Metamorphosis (being able to transform into other animals, objects and even people). /// This film takes the form of a documentary, where the racoons give us their testimony with Voice Overs (an original narrative form, for animation). Taking advantage of human superstitions is one of the tactics of the Tanuki, so constantly we are refer to numerous legends and folk tales (the film is a Japanese folk bestiary of creatures and traditional motifs). It's a fantasy that overflows imagination, absolutely brilliant. The theme of animals rebelling against man is common in animation, but thanks to Takahata, in Pompoko, becomes a very serious manifesto against environmental destruction, culture oblivion and the ignorance of traditions. Pompoko tone is primarily that of an elegy, where all we survey seems to be last seen: the last mountain, the last tree, the last battle (by pelida77)

Cuando se planea establecer una nueva aldea de humanos en las cercanías, la existencia de una comunidad Tanuki (perro mapache japonés) se verá en peligro. Los líderes proponen impedir el desarrollo de los humanos, declarándoles una guerra de guerrillas, probablemente sin ninguna esperanza de victoria. Pero cuentan con un arma secreta: revivir el sutil y antiguo arte de la Metamorfosis (en otros animales, en objetos y hasta en personas). Para ello entrenaran las habilidades de transformación de las nuevas generaciones Tanuki.  ///  Esta película adopta la forma de un documental en el que los mapaches nos van dando, con voces en off, sus testimonios (una forma narrativa absolutamente original). Aprovecharse de las supersticiones humanas es una de las tácticas de los Tanuki; por lo que permanentemente se remite a numerosas leyendas y relatos folklóricos (la película es un bestiario folk japonés, de criaturas y motivos tradicionales). Es una fantasía desbordante en imaginación, absolutamente genial. El tema de los animales rebelándose contra el hombre es común en la animación, pero gracias a Takahata, en Pompoko, se vuelve un muy serio manifiesto contra la destrucción del medio ambiente, el olvido de la cultura y las propias tradiciones. El tono de Pompoko es fundamentalmente el de una elegía, donde todo lo que contemplamos parece que será visto por última vez. La última montaña. El último árbol. La última batalla. (by pelida77)
